The Donner Pass Crossing — Interstate 80
The original transcontinental route. From Sacramento, California, Interstate 80 climbs steadily into the Sierra Nevada, cresting at Donner Summit (7,239 feet) before dropping past Donner Lake and the historic mountain town of Truckee, California. "Year-round" doesn't mean "always pleasant" at nearly nine thousand feet — winter storms can reduce NV-431 to a single lane, trigger short closures for avalanche control, or require chains. In summer, watch for wildfire smoke and short-notice closures during fire activity. Check Nevada 511 before descending; cell service through the upper switchbacks is intermittent at best, so download an offline map and tell someone your planned route if you're driving alone.
The Carson Valley Route — US-395
Visitors near Carson City, Nevada, Minden, Nevada, or the Eastern Sierra can reach Verdi in about forty minutes via US-395 north to Reno, then I-80 west. Watch your speed on the descent into the valley, particularly when wind advisories are posted on Nevada 511.
The Local Backroad — Old US-40 (West 4th Street) and Robb Drive
When Interstate 80 is closed, jammed, or chain-restricted, the historic pre-Interstate alignment is the route most locals turn to. Old US-40 — which runs through Reno and Sparks, Nevada as 4th Street and continues west toward Verdi — is reachable from west Reno via the Robb Drive exit, McCarran Boulevard, or West 4th Street directly. From there it's a slower, signal-controlled drive of roughly twenty to twenty-five minutes to Verdi instead of ten on the freeway: a scenic, river-adjacent alternative that's particularly useful on Sunday afternoons when Tahoe-return traffic backs up I-80, or during winter chain controls when a non-mountain alternative is welcome.

A note on this route: it threads through neighborhoods, business districts, and the river corridor, so expect signals, lower speed limits, and pedestrians. It's the right tool when I-80 turns hostile, not when you're chasing a tight arrival window. In poor visibility (snow, fog, wildfire smoke) the surface-road option can also be safer than the freeway, since speeds are lower and stopping distances more forgiving.

The Sierra Nevada is among the most beautiful — and most weather-active — driving environments in the country. Most days, every route above is straightforward and uneventful. But mountain conditions can change in under an hour, particularly between November and April, and a small amount of preparation makes the difference between a memorable drive and a frustrating one. Read the items below before you set out and you'll arrive in good spirits.
Check the road first.

California enforces chain controls on Interstate 80 (designated R1, R2, or R3) at short notice during winter storms. R1 means chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow-rated tires; R2 means chains on everything except 4WD with snow tires; R3 means chains on everything, no exceptions. If you don't have chains and a storm is in the forecast, rent or buy a set in Truckee, California or Reno, Nevada before you climb — they're inexpensive compared to being turned back at a CHP checkpoint, and they hold their value over many seasons. Practice fitting them in your driveway once before you need them on a snowy shoulder at night.
Don't trust GPS in winter.
When Interstate 80 closes, mapping apps will sometimes route around the closure via Forest Service roads, gravel roads, or unmaintained mountain passes. Every winter brings stories of travelers stranded on a "shortcut" that turned out to be a snowed-in fire road. If your route is closed, wait for it to reopen, take Old US-40 (4th Street, described above), or choose another day. Both Caltrans and Nevada DOT recommendations are the same on this point: do not deviate from posted highways during a winter storm.
Drive the freeway like a freeway.
Interstate 80 through the Truckee River corridor sees heavy commercial-truck traffic, frequent merging from on-ramps, and very fast through-traffic. Stay right except to pass, leave generous following distance (the Sierra has surprisingly long stopping distances on cold pavement), and signal early on lane changes so the trucks behind you have time to react. The Verdi exit comes up faster than first-time visitors expect — slow into the off-ramp rather than at it, and don't be the driver who realizes too late and crosses two lanes at the gore point.
Cell service is spotty.
The Truckee River canyon, Mt. Rose Highway, and most of US-50 between South Lake Tahoe and Carson City have stretches with limited or no coverage. Download offline maps before you climb, keep a paper map or printed directions for the last few miles, and let someone know your planned route and arrival window if you're driving alone — particularly off-season or after dark.
Summer carries its own risks.
Wildfire smoke can reduce visibility on short notice, and active fires occasionally close I-80, US-50, or NV-431 for days. If smoke is dense, consider postponing — the Sierra is most rewarding when you can see it.
